The Chhattisgarh Story, Beyond Forests
When people think of Chhattisgarh, one often thinks about forests, pretty waterfalls, plentiful mineral resources, and many varied tribal cultures. Besides its natural beauty, Chhattisgarh is home to the dreams, determination and aspirations of teachers and their students, who depend on getting a good education for a better future.
Nearly one-third of Chhattisgarh’s population belongs to Scheduled Tribes, making it home to one of India’s richest cultural mosaics. Communities such as the Gonds, Baigas, Halbas, and Murias have preserved unique languages, traditions, art forms, and indigenous knowledge systems for generations. In classrooms where students come from diverse linguistic and cultural backgrounds, the role of teachers extends far beyond instruction. They become community changemakers, blending local wisdom, tribal ways of learning, and culturally responsive teaching practices with modern pedagogy to create inclusive learning environments that honour students’ identities while preparing them for the opportunities of an evolving world.
Teaching in a culturally diverse classroom requires much more than the ability to know what to teach – it also requires the ability to create inclusive classrooms using local culture and/or local materials to support student learning; incorporate technology into the classroom appropriately; and be flexible to meet the ever-changing needs of their students. Teacher preparation programmes can help prepare teachers with these skills.
Inspiring ground stories of future educators from Sterlite EdIndia Foundation’s Teaching Plan Competition Recognising this need.
Sterlite EdIndia Foundation has been working in Chhattisgarh since 2021, partnering with government bodies, teacher education institutions and academic stakeholders to build a stronger, future-ready teacher education ecosystem. Over the years, the Foundation’s work has expanded across 18 districts, supporting 26 Teacher Education Institutions through its Teacher Education Programme while also contributing to systemic reforms through its Data Analytics Support Programme.
The foundation’s approach goes beyond conventional training. Rather than treating teacher preparation as a one-time academic exercise, it focuses on building competencies through continuous engagement. Workshops, learning circles, expert webinars, internship support, mock CTET assessments, competitions, and digital learning opportunities are designed to equip pre-service teachers with the knowledge, skills, and confidence to effectively respond to the diverse learning needs of students and create inclusive, engaging, and future-ready classrooms.
Dr. Arun Kumar Dubey Principal, Columbia College highlights the impact of Sterlite EdIndia Foundation’s Lesson Planning initiative.
This practical approach has touched thousands of pre-service teachers in Chhattisgarh. They have participated in training sessions and workshops that strengthen lesson planning, classroom management, assessment design, technology integration and reflective teaching practices all aligned with the vision of the National Education Policy (NEP) 2020 and the National Professional The results have been encouraging.
Reflecting on this collaboration, Anil Painkra, Principal of DIET Dharamjaigarh, shared: Under the guidance of SCERT, Sterlite EdIndia Foundation worked shoulder to shoulder with DIET Dharamjaigarh to build the capacity of student teachers. The foundation organised three mock tests to help prepare our students for CTET and CGTET. These initiatives proved highly beneficial, and many students successfully cleared both examinations.” Faculty members have also highlighted the value of practical exposure in preparing the pre-service teachers. Anil Banjare, PSTE In-charge at DIET Koriya, noted:
“At the start of their careers, pre-service teachers need all the support they can get. Sterlite EdIndia Foundation has been instrumental in their growth by providing valuable internship support. Combined with the resources available on the Akrava app, these experiences have equipped our student teachers with the skills and confidence needed to excel.” Beyond teacher education, EdIndia has also contributed to strengthening educational governance in Chhattisgarh through its Data Analytics Support Programme. In one of the state’s major foundational learning initiatives (FLN), the programme supported the monitoring of over 909,000 students from 26,500+ schools, enabling administrators to make timely, evidence-based decisions through interactive dashboards and performance analytics. These tools helped identify learning gaps, prioritise interventions and support effective planning for Foundational Literacy and Numeracy (FLN) initiatives. Standards for Teachers (NPST).
A quick glimpse into Sterlite EdIndia Foundation’s recent educator capacity-building sessions in Chhattisgarh
This work is part of a larger philosophy that has guided EdIndia since its inception, better decisions create better systems, and better systems create better learning opportunities for children. Across India, Sterlite EdIndia Foundation’s Data Analytics Support Program has processed over 330 million data points and enabled more than 550 data-driven decisions, empowering education administrators with actionable insights through advanced analytics and interactive dashboards. In Chhattisgarh, these capabilities have complemented teacher education initiatives by helping education leaders monitor learning outcomes, identify gaps, and translate evidence into timely, informed action that strengthens educational planning and delivery.
What makes this journey particularly meaningful is that it combines technology with human connection. Every workshop delivered, every learning circle conducted, every internship supported and every dashboard analysed ultimately serves the same purpose to ensure that children learn from capable, confident and well-prepared teachers.
The story of Chhattisgarh is therefore not just about forests, festivals or natural resources. It is also about institutions choosing to innovate, educators choosing to grow and systems choosing to evolve.
Education transformation does not happen overnight. It happens when aspiring teachers receive meaningful preparation, faculty members get the support they need for continuous learning and development, when administrators are supported with data for evidence-based decision making when organisations and governments work together towards a common vision. At Sterlite EdIndia Foundation, that vision remains unchanged: preparing future-ready teachers and strengthening the systems that enable quality education. In Chhattisgarh, this transformation continues one pre-service teacher, one teacher education institution, and one data-informed decision at a time, creating a stronger foundation for the educators who will shape generations to come.
